Totara Burls are one of the rarest forms of native timber found in the world. Many bushman have spent their entire lives working in the forests have never come across anything to compare to this spectacular piece.carved by mother nature herself, a burl of this size and age is a rare treasure. This burl was discovered on a muture totara tree in 1985 by a friend called Pratty whilst working at Maungatanwha, just north of hawkes bay in New Zealand. The Burl was carefully cut away from the dead tree and once felled, the growth rings were counted. The tree was over 420 years old, dating back to 1565AD.Severl weeks were spent in the preparation of the burl, cleaning the bark from the flutes and sandblasting, meticulously sanding,by hand with 220 and 400 grit sandpaper.A 3 pot oil mix was then applied. Pratty's dedication to this piece has resulted in a prpfessional masterpiece of museum quality a professional masterpiece of museum quality and international standards.
