Description
P204 Unattributed. HARMONIOUS GENTLEMEN. Daguerreotype, American, c. 1850. Three dapper young men, Leverett Saltonstall, Jr. of Boston and two companions. Quarter plate, brass double-elliptical mat, modern ultra-clear glass, preserver, housed in morocco leather case with floral motif. The plate exhibits a ring of natural tarnish following the contours of the mat, and some very minor and mostly peripheral spotting. Identity of Saltonstall (center) established by comparison with another daguerreotype taken at the same sitting, in the collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society (published in the 1994 Daguerreian Society Annual; see below). Very likely, three plates were exposed, and each man left the studio with one, the MHS plate belonging to Mr. Saltonstall, and this one to either of his companions. Provenance: Originally surfaced in the Boston area in the mid-1990s, having been found by a local picker and sold to a fine arts dealer, from whom New York City photo dealer Thomas Harris acquired it, who in turn sold it to me in 2006. Scion of one of the “first families” of Massachusetts (or Boston Brahmin, to borrow his contemporary Ralph Waldo Emerson’s memorable phrase) Leverett Saltonstall, Jr. was a member of the political dynasty founded by Sir Richard Saltonstall, one of the original grantees of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His ancestors included a judge in the Salem witch trials, and among his progeny, a Depression-era governor of the state. A museum quality piece of photographic Americana! Authenticity completely guaranteed. excellent condition except as noted.
