Description
I am continuing to explore traditional quilting designs and Celtic imagery for sources of inspiration. This rug, # 48 in the series, is a merger of a basic log cabin square and a Celtic-style spiral. It is the same pattern as the "square spiral" rug offered in my store, with a different management of color. I am very happy with the result. Rag rugs are hand-knit in the United States from from 100% locally-sourced, post-consumer recycled fabric which is washed, dried and then sliced to ribbons and wound into balls. When I have at least ten pounds of fiber in a particular set of colors, a new rug starts to shape. Experience has shown me that additional colors will appear along the way, but I can't make a good start with less than ten pounds of prepared fiber at the beginning. The rugs can be machine washed in cold water and tumble-dried. The fibers are primarily cotton and also include wool, rayon, polyester, and other materials as found in the local sources of recycled clothing. The rugs are being created in several series: spirals, tessellations, log cabins (a subset of tessellations), stripes, and other. Tessellations are an exploration of the variety of patterns that are possible when a rug made of identical individual squares is assembled. Stripes are particularly easy to knit and sometimes develop unexpected character when assembled.
