Description
This rare 1890's style "Schlitz On Draught" Beer Sign has been hanging in my parents basement for over 25 years.Both sides are identical and look like it was never outside. The Gold and Red colors still shine brightly.  I would give it an 8 for condition on a scale of 1 to 10.The minor things that are wrong with it are easily correctable.I.m hesidant to make any improvements because I don't want to alter its original appearance until I know for sure its ok.  Remember it was made to look old.  The pictures of outdoor overhead  Tavern Signs I've seen in history books are made with a series of verticle planks with the name of the Saloon on the sign.I'm not sure when Breweries names were added and then eventually took over completly.Possibly the Tied House may have initiated this.   The original iron U shaped hanging bracket (not shown) is included with the sign. The picture doesn't do the sign any justice. The darker areas in the photo are simply shadows due to the large outward projecting globe, raised lettering and poor lighting in that room. The scanner I'm using just doesn't work very good on regular pictures. The sign looks a lot better than this picture.I'm going to have to get a digital camera and take some pictures of it outside in the bright sun. It really is in excellent condition. You could easily take a cream colored spray can. Cover the letters and lightly go over the lower section..The Red and Gold still look great. If you plan on hanging it outside.A coat or 2 of clear Polyurethane or it's equivalent would help protect it from the weather and after 10 years you will still have one of the best looking outdoor Beer Signs ever made !!!              For Tavern owners,  customers will ask " Was that sign there when the building was build ?"  If it was a Schlitz Tied House it could very well have been one just like it.                                              The sign dates back probably between 1975 and 1980.I've had it since 82 or 83. If anybody reading this knows anything about these signs I would appreciate any info.                                                                   Size is approximately the same  as any normal outdoor plastic beer sign except this one weights 35 to 45 lbs.Shipping and packaging would be difficult. So I am willing (for a small fee of a 6 pack of Schlitz, no cans)to meet the buyer 1/2 way 100mile max. In all of Ozaukee and Washington county.Cities of Milwaukee,Racine and Kenosha I have only seen 3 of these hanging outside Saloons. None were anywhere near the condition of this one. I've never seen one on Ebay or any of the Beer shows I've been to. So recently Pabst (owner of the name) now the largest American Brewery who doesn't even make their own beer. Decides to bring back 1960's Schlitz !!   Well Great !!  But they will never make these signs again. Plastic and Neon are much more inexpensive to produce then what it would take to mold all these pieces, paint and assemble this 3 dimensional work of art !! How many outdoor beer signs look good enough you can hang them in your rec room ??  Other major Breweries must of made similiar 1890's style signs like these... Where are they ????                                                                                  On Aug-01-08 at 13:14:03 PDT, seller added the following information:This rare 1890's style "Schlitz On Draught" Beer Sign has been hanging in my parents basement for over 25 years.Both sides are identical and look like it was never outside. The Gold and Red colors still shine brightly.  I would give it an 8 for condition on a scale of 1 to 10.The minor things that are wrong with it are easily correctable.I.m hesitant to make any improvements because I don't want to alter its original appearance until I know for sure its ok.
