This magnificent piece stands 22 inches high (very large) by 9 inches wide and deep. This vase is classic Satsuma and represents the best of their art - museum quality. The ancient Japanese province of Satsuma was located in the southern part of the island of Kyushu. Its association with the production of pottery was well known by the early 17th century. It was at this time that master artisans from Korea were introduced following a series of invasions by Japan of Korea and the impress of artist into service for the Satsuma Shogunate. Many of these finer pieces adhered to the old cream-colored body covered with a finely crackled glaze, a hallmark of Satsuma. They were painstakingly painted with thick enamels, often in elaborate decoration and depicting themes directly from the Japanese ethos of legends, court life, and artistic values. These are highly sought by a growing body of collectors all over the world.
