Description
Spectacular Gino Sarfatti design made in Italy, imported for Lightolier. I knew that this was designed by Sarfatti, I just couldn't find any information on it until now. I found a picture of the chandelier in a 1952 Interiors magazine ad for Lightolier. Manufactured in Italy, exported for Lightolier. This is large, at 36 inches wide. Absolutely perfect hang down height for a standard ceiling. It also was available with a longer rod for higher ceilings. The condition is very good for being 50 years old. A couple of spots of tarnish here and there but it's not that noticeable as the pictures tell the story. Usually these starburst brass lights are very dark and tarnished, not this one. They took good care of it. This particular line was from Lightolier's "ASTRAL" group. This one designed by Sarfatti. They were the first starburst chandeliers and were in production from 1952 to 1959. THERE IS ANOTHER ASTRAL GROUP DESIGN FROM SARFATTI ON 1STDIBS FOR $4,200. THAT ONE HAS 16 RODS RADIATING OUT OF THE END OF OF A POINTED CONE. THE ONE I HAVE LISTED HERE WAS CALLED "SKYROCKET," AS LISTED IN THE LIGHTOLIER CATALOGUE OF 1954. IT HAS 24 RODS RADIATING OUT OF THE CENTER SPHERE TO FORM THE CLASSIC STARBURST. THE "SKYROCKET" WAS THE TOP OF THE LINE OF THE ASTRAL GROUP. Unlike most other "Starburst" lights of that period or any period, this Sarfatti design is superior, being that the center section is a round disk, like a hockey puck, opposed to the round ball that you see in all other starburst lights of the period. Also, more importantly, is that the thickness of the brass rods and the center sections are much thicker than any other design for a starburst of that period. So, the rods do not bend or break easily and the center section is just like a strong hockey puck. The design of the ends are also completely different from a standard sputnik which is rounded when it attaches to the rods. The ends from this fixture are cylindrical, architectural tubes, very nice. When you see all the other types of sputniks of the time, you will see fraying of the brass at the tips because of the heat from the bulbs over decades and also because the brass was thin and cheap. This one has none of that because the metal is at least twice as thick as any others. It's construction is superior. Shipping is free via Greyhound. I would have to make a large custom box and use a lot of packing material. Please ask all questions. My buy it now price includes shipping.
