This photo was produced by M. P. Rice of Washington D. C. in 1891 from the original negative taken by Alexander Gardner in 1864. Rice made large photos & cabinet photos from the original Gardner negatives. The matt measures 9 3/4" by 7 3/4". The actual photo measures 5 5/16" by 4 1/16".Note: The original image taken by Alexander Gardner is listed & shown on page 136 plate 41 in "The Face Of Lincoln" by James Mellon.The back has two original paper labels present. The tiny blue label has the following wording : "The Ribbon Printing Co. 10 E. 14th St. N. Y." The large label has the following wording : "The Only True Likeness from the only original untouched negative in existence." & also "When President Lincoln commissioned General Grant Lieutenant General, commanding all the American armies in 1864, it was suggested that the President and General have their photographs taken to commemorate the event. They did so; the negatives were put aside and entirely forgotten until the photographer recently came across them, when it was decided to preserve them in their original unretouched condition."There are a number of small brown foxing marks on front & back. There is a tiny insignificant chip off of the bottom left corner tip of the photo which may have occured when M. P Rice originally attached the photo to the matt. Otherwise, the photo is in excellent condition.
