Description
This album was compiled by LeRoy Stoudt during the era of 1950-1958. The cover is titled "Stock Car Auto Raceing (sic)". This is a large, thick, & impressive album. The album measures 14 5/8" by 11 1/2" by 2 5/8" thick. There are all sorts of different sizes of photos in the album. But, the most frequently encountered size present in this album is the 7" long by 5" wide size. The amazing drama & danger of the stock car races is captured in its full glory through this phenomenal collection of racing photos. A large number of the photos show accidents & wrecks. A highly detailed & revealing capsule of this wonderful & quite dangerous 1950's era of stock car racing. There are a total of approximately 227 different photos in the album. All of the photos have the original informative inked notations. Many of the photos have detailed inscriptions relating to the specific accident &/or race that the car was in & exactly what occurred during the race &/or accident. The vast majority of the photos were taken by Walter T. Chernokal (1924-2004) who was a regular columnist on racing for the Chester Times and the Area Auto Racing News. His work was also seen in the late Illustrated Speedway News and the National Speed Sport News. He was a prize-winning photographer for the Delaware County Daily Times Newspaper of Chester, PA and a historian of U.S. short-track racing. He was also a founder and race official of the American Racing Association sprint car group in the fifties. Many of the photos were hand colored by LeRoy Stoudt. A small number of the photos were taken by other photographers. In addition to the approximately 227 original photos there are also a small number of clippings showing race cars from magazines or newspapers. From a writeup of Past Masters in stock car racing on crucean.com is the following information about photographer Walter Chernokal: "Walter Chernokal: Chernokal was a writer, promoter, official and announcer in addition to being an award winning news photographer for the Chester, PA Times. He was also a veteran AP stringer. He was active primarily in the east from “about 1950 to maybe the early 90's” according to his son, Jim. His career also took him to Indy on several occasions. His work includes AAA, USAC, URC, ARDC and jalopies. An early proponent of motor driven cameras (Robot then Nikon equipment), Chernokal was able to capture several of racing's iconic images, having two published by Life Magazine including his famous Charlie Musselman flip sequence at Langhorne in 1957. Life also published Roger McCluskey's flip at Reading in 1965. In terms of national exposure, Chernokal may be auto racing's greatest lensman. All of his work was 35mm and black & white. He was a championship bowler and won many awards with his ping pong skills during the war. Eighty year old Chernokal died in 2004. Presently his son owns his negatives."There are also numerous newspaper clippings about various stock car races & accidents. The clippings which relate to the specific cars shown from the specific races are, for the most part, on the same page as the relevant photos. There are also many race tickets & ticket stubs. There are approximately 42 racing tickets or racing ticket stubs. Some of the tickets are for Grand National Nascar Races including May 1951, Sept. 1952, Sept. 1953, Sept. 1954, Sept. 1955, Sept. 1956. There is a notation which reads "Langhorne Speedway Late Model Stocks Sanctioned by NASCAR Sun. Sept. 20-1953 250 mi. race on one mi. dirt track won by 120-Dick Rathman 53-Hudson, 2nd place 92-Herb Thomas -53 Hudson, 3rd place-12 Speed & Thompson 53 Olds 88". This notation is next to the Sept. 1953 250 Mile Grand National Circuit Late Model Race ticket.Inscriptions by LeRoy Stoudt who compiled the album are on the first interior page and are shown in photo #s 2, 3, and 4 of the slide show: The album was inscribed as follows: "The racing photos in this album were colored by myself, LeRoy Stoudt, and are a record of the different races and race tracks I've been to see. All these accidents happened at these different tracks when I as a fan of the automobile racing sport was present. All photos were taken by Walter T. Chernokal, 932 W. 9th St., Chester, Pa except photos of the thrill shows. Joie Chitwoods Auto Daredevils B. Ward Beams Champion Daredevils" "This album is the property of LeRoy Stoudt, Gilbertsville. Pa." A photo of Joie Chitwoods is shown in the photo on page #4 of the slide show.Due to the impracticality of putting images of every page of the album onto the ebay listing page, we have created a slide show of all of the pages of the album on a Squidoo page. One hundred and five photos of spreads and closeups of photos show all of the interior pages except for a few blank pages. There are a number of closeup photos. Click here for the slide show and pass your cursor over any slide show image to bring up the controls for the slide show to control the speed of the show and to access more information. You can set the speed of the slide show with the controls. If you click any of the photos, you will see more information on that image. The following was written by LeRoy Stoudt on an interior page, This inscription is shown in photo #s 87 and 89 of the slide show: "Stock car auto racing was discontinued at the Sanatoga Speedway because of a contract disagreement between Geo. Marshman promoter and the Pottstown Allstar Stock Car Racing Ass. Racing was to resume but it hasn't for 1957. Also not in 1958. Below are the point standing at the end of the racing. Marshman promoter and the Pottstown Allstar Stock Car Racing Ass. Racing was to resume but it hasn't for 1957. Also not in 1958. Below are the point standing at the end of the racing. Note the Allstars are running at Dorney Park Speedway for the remainder of 1957 and also 1958 and at Hatfield Hi Speedway. No racing at Sanatoga Speedway. LeRoy.The album shows much wear & in period use. There are some in period reinforcements to the corners of album covers. A few interior pages have a few taped repairs. All the album pages are browned with age. Many of the album pages have chips, tears, & are somewhat brittle here & there. We have taken 11 photos, chosen at random, out of the album to look to see if there are any markings on the backs. We found one photo back marked with Walter T. Chernokal's rubber stamping on the back. We did not bother to check any more backs. Some of the backs have two tiny paper hinges at the left & right edges to hold the photos into the album in addition to the four corners. The photos slide out smoothly & are not attached to the four corners. The two tiny hinges at the sides can be separated carefully from the page which leaves just two tiny paper hinge residue spots on the photo back. Actually, all of the photos should be left in the album. We just wanted to provide a very accurate & detailed description so we took a few photos out for examination.
