Description
Own A Piece Of History! This is one of the last surviving original ecology flags. It is 3' x 5' and was purchased in the summer of 1968, by me, at the Los Angeles Free Press Bookstore in Pasadena, California. There is some damage: One of my older brothers came home from Marine Corps Boot Camp in 1969, saw it hanging on my wall, pulled it down, and said he was going to burn it. Needless to say I fought to liberate it from him and got it back. So, there is some damage (two small holes) from being pulled off a wall. After that it was kept carefully hidden in a box, only brought out on rare occasions to show people as an item of interest. I have tried to find out its' history in recent years, (a flag "expert" didn't even know what it was), but it was only recently that my wife and I were able to find out anything, Thanks Internet!   First We Asked An Expert... RE: Flag‏ From: Ted Sunderhaus Dear KevinYour flag was made sometime after 1948, have never seen this color before except in 1990’s to present Ecology flags, but the canton in those has a large letter e on green field. Sorry we could not be of more help. Ted S. SunderhausCowan Auctions Inc.Cincinnati, Ohio   And Then We Found This... History Of The Ecology Flag "The first such flag was simply the Stars and Stripes with its blue replaced by dark green and its red by light green. That design, made by the Paramount Flag Company of San Francisco in August 1967, flew at the famous People’s Park incident at the University of California in Berkeley. The colors symbolized “the pure air and green land that was America once and that can be ours again if we take the action necessary to recover our heritage.” On 25 October 1969 political cartoonist Ron Cobb developed a symbol for the ecological movement based on an oval and circle and on the initial letters of the words environment and organism. The resulting design, which he put in the public domain, resembled the Greek letter theta. Look magazine (21 April 1970) widely popularized the theta symbol, which it associated with the Greek word thanatos (death) in light of human threats to the environment and atmosphere of the earth. Look incorporated the theta – in chartreuse (later often rendered as yellow or white) – in a flag with green and white horizontal stripes and a green canton. Other variations were subsequently developed, but Look’s “Ecology Flag” remains the most popular design expressing environmental concerns." The Flag Bulletin, No. 155 The Flag Research Center   So We Asked Him About It... Re: Green Stars And Stripes‏ From: Flag Research Center To: caryn and kevin lavender Dear Caryn and Kevin,Thank you for sharing the information about the ecology flag in your e-mail. The only information that I have on the subject was included in the No. 155 issue of The Flag Bulletin which you found. If I find any further information, I will send it to you. Good luck with your search! Sincerely yours,Whitney Smith, PhDFlag Research CenterWinchester, Mass.   Then We Even Asked This Man... Re: green u.s. flag‏ From: Robert Altman To: caryn and kevin lavender The only memory I have of a green Stars and Stripes is the back cover to a Sixties magazine... maybe Ramparts or Scanlans? It was a photograph of a Betsy Ross character (with the white bonnet) sewing a Green flag... I think it was about the ecology movement. That was a strong impression and I think it's quite a popular photo. Or was. If it's the same- you really have something. You really have something anyway. I don't recall seeing it at People's Park but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. Good luck! Bring it to Antiques Roadshow. -RobertPS- Thanks for your appreciation. The People's Park is included in my new book.   The Picture We Found... Ok...well we tried to get permission from the photographer, but he never wrote us back so here is the link to it instead. http://www.sfrisch.com/ecoflag.html   And Finally...The Facts This flag was first produced by the Paramount Flag Company in San Francisco, California in 1966. This type of flag was one of a series of three types of flags: one for Peace, one for Love, and one for Ecology. It was in regular production from 1966 until 1980's. The store was sold in 1989, but they had stopped production before the store was closed. The flag was produced in three sizes: 2 x 3, 3 x 5, and 4 x 6. This flag was not labeled until the 1970's, it was then labeled with the word "Ajax", the name of the company that produced the cotton bunting of which it was made. The label has been in two places on the flag on the front and later on the back.   Terms And Conditions You are bidding on one of the surviving original ecology flags.
