Description
Title Joseph Smith Wooden Plane -Could be Mormon Founder? Here is a an interesting item. Let me tell you what I know. This wooden plane has two names stamped into the wood. The first is H Chapin. The second is Joseph Smith. Now H. Chapin was the founder of a tool company that had a start-up at Pine Meadow Connecticut in 1826. This plane can be dated because the firm grew, involved partners and diversified. In 1828 Herman Chapin bought out his partner Daniel Copeland and the name changed to the Union Factory. Wooden planes begin to have Union Factory stamped along with Chapin’s name. (The company stayed as a family business until 1897.) So I think we are on good ground to say the wooden plane was manufactured between 1826 and 1830. Joseph Smith’s history is better recounted by the Church and those interested in the development of this religion should look at Mormon history. Here are some keys. Joseph Smith grew up in various parts of upstate New York, not that far from the New Hartford region of Connecticut, home of the Chapin factory. Joseph Smith moved from New York to Pennsylvania, back to New York, to Ohio, Missouri and then to help construct and settle Nauvoo, Illinois. As he moved and as his fortunes went up and down, it is likely that he built his own house, remodeled others. In Ohio, he oversaw the development of the first Temple (Kirkland 1831). He lived above Whitney’s general store in 1832 in Ohio. As he was building his church and members of the church, he may well have been building houses, churches, barns etc. ( He and his family moved to places including Manchester, NY, Harmony, PA, Fayette NY, Palmyra NY Colesville, NY It is hard to believe he was not involved to the point where he would have had his own tools. Now you know, there were lots of Joseph Smiths in the development of this country. Several were probably farmers or carpenters with their own tool chest. Joseph Smith’s physical environs were fairly close to H Chapin factory (close enough for local hardware’s to stock these wooden planes) makes this story plausible but not certain. If you have ever used a wooden plane making molding, you know that nicks, cuts and scratches and bits of blood and sweat are part of the game. Is there a chance that there is identifiable DNA on the plane? Doubtful, but if you watch any of those CSI programs there is some chance. It is not out of the possibility that this wooden plane could be proven to be Joseph Smiths. And thus an object of tremendous interest. It is such an interesting set of intersections. Good luck. For right now it is locked in a safe ready for your purchase. I would be pleased to answer any questions.
