Description
Juan Quezada is the father of Mata Ortiz pottery. He is the originator and master potter. His work is in many major museums and collections. In the late 1970's he discovered the technique of the ancient Paquime or Casas Grandes Indians of Northern Mexico, who years before, traded their pots with Arizona, California and New Mexico tribes. Unlike other potters, Mata Ortiz pottery is formed from coiled clay by hand without benefit of a wheel. They are exceptionally delicate and the painting is accomplished with fine brushes containing only of a few children's hairs. The color is chosen by the soil used. The pigments used are obtained locally. I only collected the finest examples of first and second generation artists, many of them the originators of now famous styles. Now in a home of 60% fewer square feet than my larger home, there is no room for them. You can be the beneficiary. Watch for additional listings soon. This museum quality signed pot is Juan's classic high shoulder shape; a truer representation of his artistry. He prefers this rounder style as the design flow is better. His sister, Lydia, actually conceived the form in the 1970's ; but it is Juan's signature style. The design is from the mid-late 1990's. The faint gray color of this pot is especially rare and innovative; a sort of high-tech style, giving it a unique feel and character; opposed to the many bone white Mata Ortiz pots. Like a "key-coin" in a coin collection, owning a fine Juan Quesada is a must for any collector. If you never own but one Mata Ortiz pot, it should be one of Juan's. Other Quesada pottery may be as fine, but even the best of other Quezada's, like Lydia, Noe, Mauro, or Nicolas; are not Juan Quesada's. Beware; you can become addicted to this finest of fired and hand painted clay pottery! Mata Ortiz pottery are magnificent pieces of art of clay, and are not intended for food or beverage use. Every pot will be carefully packed and shipped insured. If you are not a legitimate buyer, please do not bid. All sales are final. I'll be most happy to try and answer any questions you may have. A free ring stand is included. 8 1/2" diameter 9 1/4" high. I only accept PayPal.
