Patent for Building Clocks John Quincy Adams. DS. November 6, 1827. Washington. 4pg. 11 ¼” x 14 ¾”. Cosigned by Henry Clay as Secretary of State. Summary: Patent granted to Harrison G. Dyer for “a new and useful improvement in the construction of Clocks”. Partial Transcript “the application of what may be termed an endless lever, instead of the common tooth and pinion.. Let there be a wheel of the same number of teeth as it is required that this wheel should revolve slower than the arbor into which it is to be geared & of such a width that these teeth shall not be of too great, an angle when a line drawn across the circumference & shall pass the opposite extreme of the teeth two & two. The arbor into which this wheel is to be geared, is to have no teeth, but a groove out in & round itso that one turn shall be of the same length on the arbor as the width of the wheel. The distance from the point of contact on the circumference of the wheel to the center should be to the point of contact on the arbor to the centre as the velocity of one is to the velocity of the other so that ~f a line be wound round the arbor at the point of contact it will be equal in length to one tooth of the wheel... “. Biography: Harrison G. Dyar was a prominent American inventor for his time. In 1828 Dyar created one of the first telegraphs in the United States when he sent electrical sparks through chemically treated tape to burn dots and dashes. In 1838, he was granted a patent for making soda from brine and ammonia carbonate.
