Description
A first edition hardcover of John Quincy Adams', Oration on the Life and Character of Gilbert Molier de Lafayette. Book is inscribed on a tipped-in page, "Francis W. Pickens from John Quincy Adams." Signature and inscription are bold and clear. Front cover is detached from spine; book is otherwise in very good condition. Book is housed in a custom made slipcase with marbled papers inside. Few signed copies of this book have ever surfaced. Of particular significance is the association of the inscription. Adams and Pickens served in Congress together in the 1830s and early 1840s. Pickens was a South Carolina politician who served in Congress from 1934 to 1843, and was Minister to Russia from 1858 to 1860. He was South Carolina Governor from 1860 to 1862, during which time Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter. The signature and inscription have been deemed authentic by John Reznikoff on behalf of University Archives. Reznikoff is the foremost authority in the world on political autographed items. Item will come with a Letter of Authenticity from University Archives. Winning bidder pays $25.00 for Priority Shipping with Insurance. Money order, cashiers check or personal check only. PLEASE NOTE: Since ebay is demanding that seller's use Paypal, winning bidder will have to pay an additional 5% over the winning bid if they opt to use Paypal as payment method.
