Description
The story that catapulted the already popular Betty Boop character to even greater fame. In July 2005, the life-sized mascot was found beheaded and lying streetside on Virginia Beach's Shore Drive. This notorious stretch of road where a running tally was kept of fatal accidents to warn drivers now added cartoon violence to its rap sheet. The drive welcomed Northerners to the resort city via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and they annually posed with the icon whose home was in front of a trendy boutique called Cool and Eclectic Furniture & Fashions. The grandson of the creators of the character put out a media advisory offering a reward for the return of the noggin, but after a media blitz, including an Associated Press story that made top headlines, the head remained missing. The newspaper and TV press did a follow-up and still no head. What happened to the head? Who took it? Will it ever be found? It upset fans so much that Zippy the Pinhead was recruited to restore her head, at least in the cartoon world of his zanny nationally syndicated strip. So closure came, but only in the strip. The statue is a discontinued one and is unavailable. She's destined to go down in history as another Headless mystery like the Headless Horseman. Unless her head mysteriously turns up.
