Probably English or Continental. We are estimating that the box dates circa 1725-1825. But, the box may be slightly earlier or slightly later. In any event, the box is guaranteed to be very early. The entire box on all surfaces of the top, the sides, & the bottom is carved in very high relief. On the lid the designs stick out as much as 1/8". On the ends the designs stick out as much as 3/16".The lid of the box shows a funeral procession. The lid has seven people walking in the procession & a dead person in an open coffin turned on its side for viewing. The front & back side panels of the box have plants & flowers. Each end has two twisted women that appear to be part fish & part angels. The bottom has two much larger part fish & part angel women with wings. These two figures are curved at an angle & are standing over a funeral urn filled with flowers. On each side of the urn there is a bird perched on a pedestal.We do not know what kind of wood the box is carved from. But, the wood is very attractive. The wood of the box has a beautiful rich smooth patina on the high points acquired from many years of natural use. The hinge to the box is made in metal in six sections. The hinge works o. k. but requires a slight bit of pressure at the left for the lid to slide down tight into the bottom of the box. The box is constructed of four pieces of wood ( two end panels, bottom, & lid ).There are four age cracks to the wood. One is a 1/2" crack at the back center of one end section. Another is a 1/4" crack at the back center of the other end section. The other two cracks which measure 1/2" & 3/4" are at the bottom of the backside edge. Because of the elaborate carved designs on the box these four small cracks blend in quite well & are not that noticeable until you examine the box closely.The box measures 3 3/4" long by 2" wide by 1 1/8" deep.
