Description
English Tinted Stereo Daguerreotype of a Young Girl by KilburnCollectibles:Vintage Photographs:Daguerreotypes:Portraits:Stereo (click picture for more images and more detail) A fine double 1/9 plate tinted stereo daguerreotype of a seated lady by Kilburn. She is dressed in a silk dress, with a shawl/mantle. There is a bonnet and a basket of flowers on the table next to her. There is a typical Kilburn cloud backdrop. This unusual image is in superb condition, with excellent contrast and fine detail. The image is taken on a single plate and there is some tarnishing around the edges of the images There are also some scratches to the left image at the bottom of the lady's dress and some fine scratches to the top of the right hand image. These do not interfere with the viewing of the image, which makes a perfect 3d image. Please note the actual plate is better than the enlarged images show. The scratches are not as bad in reality as they look on the photos.  The original seal had deteriorated and we have resealed the plate with archival tape. Apart from that everything is original. It is housed under a simple bronzed brass mat, which has some degradation down the centre. It is then set in a simple, maroon leather stereoview case with velvet liner. There is some very minor scuffing on the face and back of the case and a small stain to the front. Although the outside of the case shows signs of light wear and tear, the interior is in fine, almost mint condition. The maroon, leather viewing case has a gently curved top, with embossed entwined royal crests on the front, which read 'By Appointment' , 'Mr Kilburn 222 Regent Street', indicating a date between 1856 and 1864. The other daguerreotypes we have of this young lady would indicate that this image was taken around 1856. There is no indication of the sitter, but our other daguerreotypes of the sitter where taken when she was a little younger. A exceptionally rare and beautiful stereo image in original condition, housed in a fine early stereoviewer  Overall Size (closed) approx 5x4.25ins (12.5x11cms), (open) 5x5x4.25 (12.5x12.5x11cms) Each visible image size 2.5x2ins (6.5x5cms).
