Description
LARGE IGUANODON JAW WITH TEETH EXCEPTIONAL UK FOSSIL, SUPERIOR SPECIMEN SPECIES: Iguanodon bernissartensisOrnithopoda Iguanodontidae, Iguanodon bernissartensis GIDEON MANTELL - IGUANODON JAW WITH TEETH FROM SUSSEX... IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC FIND Some early scientific papers on the Iguanodon by Dr. Gideon Mantell‘Memoir on a Portion of the Lower Jaw of the Iguanodon and on the Remains of the Hylaeosaurus and other Saurians’, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1841, 131, pp. 153-158. ‘On the Stucture of the Jaws and Teeth of the Iguanodon’, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, 1848, 138, pp. 183-202. ESTABLISHED, TRUSTED EBAY UK SELLER WITH OVER 600 EBAY SALES AND 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK Close-up showing large serrated leaf-shaped teeth of Iguanodon, also there are three smaller unworn erupting serrated teeth next to the mandibular bone  Close-up showing large serrations on this extremely fine large example of an Iguanodon tooth Smaller erupting unworn serrated Iguanodon tooth situated next to this massive root which is part of a large (over 2 inches!) Iguanodon tooth! Close-up of tooth showing an unusual serrated edge Close-up showing crystalised internal structure of tooth Wealden outcrop showing fine sedimentary layers Description  Iguanodon made famous by the greatest pioneer of all time of dinosaur study Dr. Gideon Mantell:  This is a well preserved, large, robust Iguanodon dinosaur jaw. There are ten original teeth of varying morphological type in situ displayed in this superior specimen. Leaf-shaped serrated teeth. None of the teeth appear to be displaced, they remain in situ, as they were in life before the animal died. The majority of teeth are very large. There are three smaller erupting serrated teeth situated at the base of the jaw next to the madibular bone. Another thing of interest to mention is that one tooth's internal structure has completely mineralised into white crystalised quartz, a rare occurrence in dinosaur teeth. Situated in the jaw bone's external surface are three large foramina. This example belonged to an adult 10m plus sized Iguanodon bernissartensis, the largest species of Iguanodon. Iguanodon jaw fossils found on the Isle of Wight belong to the much smaller species known as Iguanodon atherfieldensis (recently renamed Mantellisaurus), a much smaller, more gracile type of Iguanodon dinosaur. Only a few examples of Iguanodon jaws have been found in the UK and the world (the Belgium specimens of 1878 being an exception, being a one-off find), and all, including the Bernissart specimens, reside in museum collections. Iguanodon jaw specimens found in the UK, including this one, show different characteristics, and therefore are all scientifically important. For this reason, I am sure there will some academics scrutinising these photos looking for unrecorded anatomical details to add to the knowledge of Iguanodon. Indeed, be in no doubt this is a very special piece. This is a must have piece for the serious collector or museum for further study. Exceptionally rare UK fossil. Collectors looking for even a single tooth of Iguanodon will find it an extremely hard, near impossible, item to source! This is a possible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an Iguanodon jaw with teeth. There is not another example on the market like this with teeth for sale. If you find this hard to believe you can try searching yourself  by asking the main auction houses, fossil dealers and try looking on google as well. The thing is that these are impossible things to source, we can almost guarantee that you will not find another Iguanodon jaw with teeth like this for sale anywhere! Iguanodon bernissartensis jaws with teeth all reside in museum collections - this is the only known privately owned specimen. The story about the discovery of this fossil has been featured in the Sussex press. This is a possible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... don't miss this!... please read on: Dinosaur collectors know how special this piece is. No doubt had the great man himself, Dr Gideon Mantell, found a similar specimen like this in his lifetime, to say he would be very pleased would be a huge understatement. For twelve years Mantell had only isolated Iguanodon teeth to study, it took him this long to come by a jaw which had several teeth in situ. The Mantell specimen wasn't discovered by Mantell himself, it was discovered by another collector and then handed to Mantell! Since then but only a handfull have been discovered in the UK, and they all reside in museum collections!!! This specimen is very special indeed. Together with the fact that this specimen was found in East Sussex, and not far from the original site where the very first Iguanodon fossils were discovered allegedly by Mantell's wife makes this fossil an even more precious discovery, this piece is a real treasure in the true sense of the word. This is a Solid 100% genuine fossil. There is NO repair and NO restoration whatsoever. Jaw measures 8.5 inches long. Collected April 2008 in the Hastings Beds strata in south east England. At this locality distinguished Victorian collector and fossil hunter Samuel H. Beckles (1814- 1890, discoverer of Echinodon and Becklespinax) collected many important fossils. Locality found: East Sussex, EnglandAge: Lower CretaceousStrata: Hastings Beds
