Description
"DESCRIPTION: A bronze sculpture of a reclining buffalo on the ground measuring 4 1/4 inches high, 7 inches long, and 4 inches wide. There are three letters, CMR, along with a buffalo skull shape that are drawn on the rear base of the sculpture. HISTORY OF THIS LONE BUFFALO BRONZE During his lifetime, Charles M. Russell had 53 of his original models cast in bronze. Afterwards, Russell had eight of his original models cast in plaster, which he personally hand painted. This was so some of his friends, who could not afford bronzes, could still have a Russell original sculpture. These were gifts to close friends. How many of these plaster copies were made is not know.Charlie Russell¹s wife was Nancy Russell, and among her friends were Homer and Helen Britzman. In 1943, after Nancy Russell¹s death, the Britzman¹s bought her home in Pasadena, California. The purchase of the home included some of the Russell estate, and a part of that estate were several Russell models that had never been cast. In addition there was one of the aforementioned plaster copies of Lone Buffalo. In October, 1971, Colorado Springs, Colorado collector Terry Schmidt purchased this model from Helen Britzman. In 1980, Mr. Schmidt sold the plaster copy to Clyde W. Casey, of Victor Bronze, Victor, Colorado, for certain monetary considerations and four bronze castings made from this plaster model. In March, 2008, Darrell Arnold obtained one of these four bronze castings from Mr. Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt had one of the other three of these bronzes appraised by Christopher A. Jones (membership number 5923925) of the International Society of Appraisers.
