The front side of the compact features a standing cat with a fluffy coat and a sweet face. His eyes are set with cabochon rubies. When you flip the compact over to the back side you see the imprint of the back side of the cat. This style of cat compact is rare. The compact opens with two cabochon rubies set on the side. When opened, you will find a celluloid insert in which to write. I believe the lady would use this space to write her dance card. There should be a mirror on the other side of the celluloid but the mirror is missing. I’m sure it could be replaced. On the other side of the open compact are two hinged doors. These might have been used for powder or rouge. Each door has a cabochon ruby tab. There is a small pencil at the top which fits in to a hole. Often times the pencil is lost. Thankfully, the pencil is present in this compact. The chain, attached by two rings, is 9.5 inches long. The compact is hallmarked on the edge of the bottom door. It is marked 935. The letter K is also stamped on the side of the same door. I believe it was made in Germany. Many of the compacts of this collection bear the German crown and moon symbol. The compact dates from the 1910-1920 period. The compact is 3 3/8 inches high, 2 1/8 inches wide and ½ inch deep. It is a very heavy piece, weighing 6.1 ounces on my postal scale. The condition of the compact is very good. It is free of dents or damage. The piece is precision made. Everything fits snuggly. The silver gilt finish is a deep gold color, in very good condition with no wear. These quality crafted cat compacts came in many sizes, from 2 inches to the 4.25 inches. The compacts depicted cats in many different shapes and sizes. This rare cat compact would be a fantastic addition to any collection. Good luck bidding.
