This is the second installment of their Collection Privee or Private Collection celebrating important architectural styles after the Modernista. Gotica captures the imagination of collectors and lovers of art with its aesthetics and timeless beauty. It draws on the heritage of Gothic art and was produced in a limited edition of only 1140 pieces worldwide.  With its balance of materials, harmony of line, light effects and decorative elements, the Gotica exemplifies the dazzling play of volumes which is a defining feature of Gothic architecture.   The Gotica draws its inspiration from the motifs and designs of Gothic art. Among them are the windows of the cathedral of St. Denis in Paris, the masterpiece of that era. These windows were the expression of a new spirit of openness to the outside world, using shafts of daylight to create brilliant colors.   The pen has been created by close collaboration between the Swiss craftsmen of Caran d' Ache and Miguel Cunill, master silversmiths in Barcelona since 1916. Their expertise and mastery of modern techniques have made it possible to capture the beauty and clarity of the original designs and bring several centuries of history vividly to life. It is the purity and brilliance of the decoration that gives the Gotica its original, exclusive character. The Gotica transforms a writing instrument into a link between past and future. Each panel is handcrafted with inlaid enamel into sterling silver and finished rhodium. The stunning array of fleur-de-lis, rose-shaped stained glass window and Gothic motifs are displayed in brilliant colour.   The alternating fleur-de-lis, rose-shaped stained glass window and Gothic motifs give the pen a moving quality. This luxury fountain pen takes connoisseurs back in time in both visual and sensory terms. Its rhodium-coated solid silver body conceals a sophisticated mechanism in perfect balance between engineering and aesthetics. The link between Caran d’Ache and the world of art dates back to 1924, when the company founder, Arnold Scweitzer, named his business in honour of his caricaturist friend, Emmanuel Poire. Moscow born Poire signed his work Caran d’Ache which is a French transliteration of the Russian word for pencil, “Karandash”. The Gotica is a true object of art crafted with “Swiss Made” technical perfection that should be passed on from generation to generation.    This pen is  individually numbered “1118/1140” by  engraving  on the rhodium-coated solid silver cap. An interesting finishing touch was provided by a rose being engraved on the 18ct rhodium-coated hallmarked medium gold nib. This brand new un-inked pen is presented in a finely lacquered teak case with presentation book and warranty card and materials. The pen is still in the Caran d’Ache plastic packing bag.  Proceeds from this sale are being earmarked to be donated to the families of Canadian soldiers lost in Afghanistan since the start of Canada's peacekeeping efforts in that region.
