Description
COCA-COLA COKE 1985 SPACE SHUTTLE CAN: SPACE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER 1985 In 1985 Coke became the first carbonated drink to be enjoyed in Outerspace!!!! This is a very rare example of the can designed by Coke to allow NASA astronauts to enjoy the world's favourite carbonated beverage in Outer Space.... Patents; Coca-Cola's Space-Age Dispenser By EDMUND L. ANDREWS Published: July 29, 1989 LEAD: American corporations are often criticized for thinking only about short-term profits, but in at least one way the Coca-Cola Company is planning far ahead. American corporations are often criticized for thinking only about short-term profits, but in at least one way the Coca-Cola Company is planning far ahead. Technicians there have patented a drink dispensing machine for outer space, which they hope will be used aboard the planned space station. Coke had previously developed its ''space can,'' a single-serving drink container that astronauts took aboard the space shuttle in 1985. The new machine is still in development, the company said. The patent says the dispenser overcomes the problems of operating without gravity, which makes liquids difficult to handle, and employs a novel energy-saving cooling system. The soft drinks would be stored at room temperature in five-gallon containers lined with collapsible plastic bags. After a drink is selected by pressing a button on a control panel, pistons powered by pressurized carbon dioxide would pump liquid from the storage container to a drinking container. To save power, the dispenser would chill the liquid when it was about to be consumed. As the drink passed from the storage container to the drinking can, it would flow past cooling coils that would chill it, one drink at a time This can comes to you in the original box. I beleive that one can was given to each bottler worldwide. One of the cans is on display at the Quayside museum. The can has never been activated, and is in original condition. It is on a perspex display stand with date and year on it. I doubt one of these will EVER be offered on ebay again.. Any collector would "kill" for this rare piece of Coke history!
