Description
We are pleased to offer for sale a wonderful cubist bronze by black artist Rod Taylor.  This is solid cast bronze and very heavy.  The sculpture dates to the fifties.  It is signed in the plate.  The title of the work is "meditation". Rod Taylor (b. 1932) is a sculptor and the retired Chair of the Fine Arts Department of Norfolk State University. He has over 200 exhibits to his credit and was selected by Dr. Samella Lewis in 1971 as one of the top 75 black living artists in her book, Black Artists on Art. Following his retirement at Norfolk he was appointed by the governor of the state to fill a vacancy on the board of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. He has served on the Commission's Area VI advisory panel and Arts in Education panel and is a past member of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission. He studied at Virginia State College; American University (graduate work in sculpture); Howard University; Catholic University; Virginia Union University. He exhibited at the Smithonian, The Corcoran Gallery (1965); Catholic University in 1967; Howard University in 1967; Smith-Mason Gallery in washington, D.C. in 1965; The Little Art Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. in 1968; The Saratoga Springs Art Fair; Atlanta University Annuals; Scan Art Fair, Washington, D.C. in 1966. His many awards included a 1st prize at the Saratoga Springs Art Fair in 1964; a 3rd prize for sculpture at the Smithsonian in 1964; an honorable mention also at the Smithsonian in 1964; A 1st prize at the Atlanta University Annual in 1965; plus many more.
