Description
Hello! Up for sale is a treasure trove of stereoviews, but not just any stereoviews. This is a Virtually COMPLETE 247 of 250 SET of KEYSTONE JUNIOR GEOGRAPHY UNITS #1 though #10. There are 25 Junior size -- 4 11/16" by 2 7/16" -- stereoviews in each Unit for a total of 250 consecutively numbered stereoviews. Amazingly only 3 cards are missing, #24 [from Unit #1] and #248 & #250 [from Unit 10], so set is 98.8% complete. This set is probably identical to those in the Rare regular size Keystone GEOGRAPHY Set. Also, included is what I believe to be the KEYSTONE STORAGE BOX that they would have come in.What do they show???Like the Tour of the World Set, they show places all around the world, but with a heavy emphasis on work involving manual labor, agriculture, native people & their way of life, transportation, famous buildings, famous expeditions, and a few nature views. These smaller cards were aimed at children and this set probably was used in school. Keystone Junior stereoviews were only produced & sold for a limited period of time in the 1930's, though the negatives used may be from several years to several decades earlier. How rare are these cards???Well normally there is only a couple Keystone Junior listings on eBay at any given time out of 2-5 THOUSAND listings, and they are almost always an incomplete set. This is a once in who knows how long chance to get 8 COMPLETE sets & 2 nearly complete sets of Keystone Junior views that compose the first 250 views in this series, along with what I believe is the BOX that they would have come in that is equally rare. In both cases, I have never seen any Junior Storage Boxes or other large Junior sets for sale on eBay or anywhere else for that matter. While I believe every image was also published in regular size, most of these images are UNCOMMON or RARE even in regular size!!! I haven't seen many of these images at all, despite many searches on eBay and the ones I did find often were selling for $10+ each. I can't say for sure, but there is a good chance that these are an EXACT DUPLICATE of the stereoviews in the RARE Regular Size Keystone GEOGRAPHY SET which has 1600 cards in total. I was able to find several individual views from the Geography Set and the position numbers, images & titles matched EXACTLY with the Junior cards I had. That coupled with the fact that these Junior views are from Geography Unit Numbers 1 to 10, make me feel quite confident that this is the case. What condition are they in???Since Keystone Junior images are always on unmounted photo paper, they have acquired an age/storage related curve. Most also have slight/light yellowing from age which is also normal. They have light wear to corners, minimal wear to edges, most have light soiling to backs, and images still have lots of contrast. There is a small percentage that have a bit of minor damage, like a tiny spot or two in image, a short light crease near edge, or staining to back, but even the majority of that damage is light/minor, only a small handful have really noticeable damage, and even those are still enjoyable to view. While a few are VG/VG-, the majority are in VG+ to EX condition for age. Each set of 25 originally would have come in a small bright yellow cardboard box, but they usually wore out, so all 10 individual set boxes are missing, which is pretty common for Junior View Sets. The ORIGINAL LABELED STORAGE BOX holds all 10 Boxed Sets & originally would also hold 2 Junior Viewers [missing]. Box is made out of a hard cloth covered material and the attached paper label on one end says: The Keystone Units ~ in ~ Junior Stereographs ~ Mfg. By ~ Keystone View Company ~ Meadville, Penna. The box is made of two pieces that are basically the same, one holds the 10 boxes with cards, while other one slides over the top as the cover. One corner edge of cover is loose, everything else is tight. The paper label on one end has minor paper loss & some wear/creases, mainly to margins on left side. Cover has some light stains, while top of cover has slight discoloration. Inside lining is black faux leather that is in Excellent condition. Box measures 7 1/2" by 5 1/4" and is 3 1/4" high. Overall box & label are VG+ for age.NOTE: I normally use a digital camera to photograph stereoviews, but due to the shiny surface, I figured a scanner would be easier. While the views do tend to have a sepia tone, the yellow tone in scans, is noticeably yellow than, while with the eyes it normally is light yellow. Also, on several views like the Sledging Supplies to Little America Antarctica, light grey in the view became dark grey, and some of the darker views seems to appear even darker. Over all color & contrast is pretty good, just keep in mind that anything with odd dark areas is probably from the scanner. Each stereoview has two nearly identical images with a white margin along lower edge & on right side of margin it says: Stereoview Number  Geography Unit No. #   Image Title ~ [than on next line:] Keystone View Company, Meadville, Penna.    ©  Backs of stereoviews are always blank with no writing.NOTE: Most sets have a couple nature images, usually of things specific to that region. The term agriculture, when used below, refers to all of the following, farmers at work in field, cattle, herding, crops, harvesting, milking, images of food bearing trees, vineyards, etc.Obviously it would take too long to photograph & list every view, so I gave an overview of what each set contains & more specific in about the last 3 sets. I also took photos of 6 views from each set, except for #7 & 8 where I took 12 views [due to Peary's Arctic Expeditions / Little America, Antarctica]. I took 18 views of set #10, since it was showed many interesting views of the Western United States. What does each Geography Unit Set show???Unit #1, missing card #24 ~ AfricaMany of natives doing interesting "everyday" activities & of their villages, a couple of river steamers, ivory hippo hunt, natives with dead crocodile & white man with boy holding gun, raw materials for trade, like rubber & ivory, Government Building Leopoldville, Boma, important [port] city on the Congo River, and a couple nature views. The photos make most of the stereoview(s) look a bit lighter/darker than they actually are and any fuzziness is just the photo and not the stereoview.
